POP LIFE @ Tate Modern

Posted in Arts by mikaishi on November 29, 2009

There seemed to be lots of stuff by Warhol, but I have to say my favourite pieces were by Murakami!!!! The music video starring Kirsten Dunst in Akihabara (‘Akihabara Majokko Princess’) was fun to watch ;D I hope we get to see it somewhere online soon… Some information about the past GEISAI#11 (Murakami’s annual art expo & competition in Tokyo) was shown. I still think Mr.’s work is a bit creepy… and it’s cool to know that Kaikai Kiki Co has been around for nearly 10 years now! (they are recruiting I think.. o.o).

Irresistable cuteness…

Walking in My Mind @ Hayward Gallery

Posted in Arts by mikaishi on July 15, 2009

Walking in My Mind (http://www.haywardgallery.org.uk/) explores the inner workings of the artist’s imagination through immersive, large-scale installation art. Ten international artists transform the Hayward Gallery’s indoor galleries and outdoor sculpture terraces into a series of gigantic sculptural environments, each of which represents an individual mindscape. Interior worlds of emotions, thoughts, memories and dreams collide with exterior reality, blurring the boundaries between inner and outer space. Artists include: Charles Avery, Thomas Hirschhorn, Yayoi Kusama, Bo Christian Larsson, Mark Manders, Yoshitomo Nara, Jason Rhoades, Pipilotti Rist, Chiharu Shiota and Keith Tyson.

the [white paper] concept.

Posted in Arts by mikaishi on December 21, 2008

I’ve been pondering about the idea that if we are left with a nice piece of blank white paper in front of us, the likely chances are that we’ll start doing ’something’ to it. Now this could be folding it – origami if we are keen, tearing it, using it as an ‘emergency’ tissue or something to wrap-up our gum, or maybe for some of us – to eat?… But I believe that more likely we’d be leaving some kind of ‘mark’ on it (assuming we have the right materials in hand) using pen, pencil, chalk, paint, or more easily – our dirty fingerprints.

What I find most interesting is the variety and randomness of ‘doodles’ that people do on spare bits of paper lying around in cafes, lecture rooms, mm… a receipt on a floor, toilet paper, magazines in doctor waiting rooms, etc. Now this is only natural since we always have things to think about, and it’s not surprising that we choose to draw out some of our thoughts down on solid paper. Maybe it’s something we’d like others to know? to share our problems? to advocate something or to promote? (think graffiti art) mm… to ‘express’ in general, like a feeling or an emotion! This is more prominent in the small paper pads that you’d find in art shops – now those are covered with allsorts of scribbles (and it’s funny that you’ll always find a penis drawn in there somewhere). I believe that as humans, we all have the natural tendency to express with the most simplest form besides talking or using body language – and this is to draw! To surrender to the most primitive form of expression that we’ve learnt as kids since kindergarten! The childishness that we already know, and that we do not object to use to most efficiently and easily express ourselves.

Now, as an experiment (more…)

Indigo Child 2008 @ times square, causeway bay (HK)

Posted in Arts by mikaishi on December 15, 2008

Carrie Chau (Wun Ying) is an illustration artist based in Hong Kong. One of my recent inspirations, her characters are instantly appealing in their oddly- distorted shapes. The first time I saw her art was at Google where one of her coloured pieces (A Non-Stop Big Rope Game) was featured as a custom banner for iGoogle. Her latest art exhibition (indigo child, 20 Nov – 31 Dec 2008) is something I wish I could see, although I don’t think I’d be able to go to Hong Kong this Christmas, I am happy to see some photos my friend took while she was there. :)

Underground J-popart

Posted in Arts by mikaishi on July 27, 2007

[Taken from past blog - 5 March 2007]

I was down at London on thursday and while waiting at various underground stations for train changes, I saw large walls beautifully covered by large prints of artwork, and at a closer look I immediately recognised they’re by Chiho Aoshima. The digital ‘cutesyness’ of her work on these walls actually makes the whole place a lot more attractive :)

I just read that these pieces have been installed there since July last year and sadly will be coming down at the end of this month :( Here are two pics I captured on my phone if you have not seen them yet:
